NBC 5: Records reveal problems with lap bars, safety switch on ride that injured boy

CHICAGO (September 16, 2024) – Last summer, a 10-year-old boy was thrown from a carnival ride at the Taste of Summer Festival in Antioch. The young boy was riding Moby Dick, a thrill ride that sends carnival-goers in circular motions through the air at increasing speeds. During one of the rotations, the boy was ejected from the ride and landed on the pavement, leaving him seriously injured.

State inspectors identified a number of problems with the ride following the incident, including malfunctioning lap bars and and issue with a safety device meant to stop the ride in the event of an emergency.

Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard attorney Tara R. Devine represents the family in a civil lawsuit against the ride owner, All Around Amusement of Lockport. Ms. Devine spoke with NBC 5 Investigative Reporter Bennett Haeberle about how her client is doing a little over a year since his injury and where the case stands.
