Media Coverage: A Peoria hospital admits negligence for leaving dangerous sutures inside multiple patients following surgery

PEORIA, Ill. (March 3, 2025) – UnityPoint Health, now Carle Health, has admitted negligence for leaving the wrong sutures inside a patient following a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, resulting in permanent injuries. Multiple additional patients are victims of the same error, and several lawsuits are pending in Peoria County.

In September 2019, Methodist Hospital sent a letter to the patients who were affected, alerting them that the surgeon and hospital staff had mistakenly placed barbed, non-dissolvable sutures inside of them, instead of dissolvable ones.
