CBS: Food manufacture workplace safety violations cause severe injuries

CHICAGO – Oscar Gonzalez-Malave was working on the production line at Rana Meal Solutions in Bartlett when his hand got caught inside a massive industrial pasta machine, leading to his arm being amputated just below his shoulder. Oscar filed a lawsuit against the company, accusing it of failing to protect him at work and failing to ensure the pasta machines were locked and safe during cleaning.

His injury also triggered a federal OSHA investigation, which cited Rana Meal Solutions with multiple workplace safety violations. OSHA records revealed he wasn’t the only worker to suffer an injury at a Rana plant – another worker had an arm amputated in 2015 and in 2019 and 2023, fingertip amputations were reported.

CBS’s Dave Savini sat down with Oscar’s attorneys, Aaron D. Boeder and Lance D. Northcutt, to discuss his case and how this is an example of companies putting profits over people.
