$8 Million Medical Malpractice Settlement

David J. Pritchard and Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C., attorney obtained an $8 million settlement on behalf of a child who suffered double leg amputation and brain damage as a result of a failure to diagnose and treat streptococcal infection. This settlement was approved in Cook County, Illinois.

In January of 2003, a nine-month old boy was brought to the ER by his mother with flu-like symptoms. A throat culture taken was positive for streptococcus infection. Unfortunately, neither the ER physician nor the hospital laboratory notified the mother or the family doctor of this result.

By the time the child returned to the ER three days later, the infection had advanced to the extent that the child eventually suffered double leg amputation and brain damage.

“Too often in the fast-paced and perhaps overly specialized field of medicine a tragedy occurs because of a lack of communication,” said Jamie Muir. “Although these funds are desperately needed to bring the child and family the financial assistance they need… neither this child nor his family will ever be the same.”
