CHICAGO- 16-year-old Ashley Sanchez of Aurora, Ill. was killed Tuesday night in Chicago’s Hermosa neighborhood in a car crash.
At around 11:30 p.m. in the 4500 block of West Armitage Avenue, a tan minivan rear-ended a white Dodge Charger carrying Ashley and her family. The charger then hit a parked semitrailer which subsequently killed the 16-year-old.
The Sanchez family was on her way home from a White Sox game when the crash occurred. Ashley was set to start her senior year of high school this fall. Her family described her as “a beautiful person and out.”
Ashley’s parents were also injured and are recovering at Illinois Masonic Medical Center. They suffered some leg pain, but no major injuries. The man inside the parked semi truck was not hurt.
Relatives of the Sanchez family believe that this was not a normal hit and run, but an attempted carjacking. In a recorded 911 call around the time of the crash, a dispatcher is heard talking to a woman who said that someone was following their vehicle and trying to carjack them.
The offending minivan fled the scene and its passengers have not yet been found, however security footage captured the vehicle and are investigating.
