Illinois Tollway Worker Killed in Hit and Run on I-294

ALSIP, Ill. (September 19, 2017) – An Illinois tollway worker was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday afternoon on I-294 near south suburban Alsip.

Just before 12:30 p.m., the maintenance worker was outside of his vehicle picking up debris along the right shoulder of southbound I-294 near milepost 11.75. As he walked back to his car, a semi-truck pulling a trailer side swiped the worker and his car. The driver who fatally struck the worker did not stop.

State Police have not yet released a description of the suspect vehicle, just that it was a tractor-trailer.

The worker was later identified as 48-year-old David M. Schwarz of Monee, Ill. Schwarz was a 25 year veteran of the tollway, a husband, and father of two.
