Many of us have certain stereotypes about people who drive different types of cars, but is there any truth to them? Do people who drive sports cars or pickup trucks really drive more dangerously than other drivers?
It turns out there may be a grain of truth in some of our perceptions about certain kinds of drivers. A recent study from Insurify looked at crash data to find the ten car models with the highest number of reckless driving citations. Keep reading to learn more.
What Is Reckless Driving?
Broadly speaking, reckless driving is when a driver behaves in a way that is more likely to lead to serious injury or property damage. Some driving behaviors that could be considered reckless driving include:
- Speeding
- Weaving through traffic
- Failing to use turn signals when turning, merging, or changing lanes
- Failing to yield the right-of-way of other vehicles
- Failing to stop at stop signs or traffic lights
- Following too closely
- Slowing down or stopping suddenly without reason
- Speeding up to cross an intersection when the light turns yellow
- Ignoring cyclists or pedestrians
- Passing illegally
- Cutting off drivers who are trying to pass
- Chasing other drivers
- Speeding up to honk, yell, flash headlights, or gesture at other drivers
- Racing other drivers
Connection Between Reckless Driving and Car Model
According to data from the Insurify study, the average number of reckless driving infractions is 15 out of every 10,000 vehicles. But of the top 10 vehicles in terms of reckless driving infractions, three are sports cars, while two pickup truck models also made the list. This suggests that reckless drivers are more prone to buying certain vehicles, though the data is not definitive.
