CHICAGO (May 5, 2022) – A bicyclist was fatally struck by a car in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night in Chicago’s Old Irving Park neighborhood. The crash marks at least the third fatal bicycle crash in Chicago since the start of 2022.
According to Chicago Police, 22-year-old Nick Parlingayan was riding his bike in the 3800 block of North Milwaukee Avenue around 9:20 p.m. when he was hit by a car that fled the scene. Parlingayan was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a head injury where he was pronounced dead.
As of Thursday morning, there was no one in custody. Anyone with information is asked to call Chicago Police at (312) 745-4521. Police say the driver was in a 2020-2022 model black Nissan Versa, and the car likely has front passenger bumper damage and headlight damage.
According to Block Club Chicago, Parlingayan is at least the third bicyclist killed in Chicago since the start of 2022. This is also not the first bicyclist killed on Milwaukee Avenue. In 2019, a 37-year-old cyclist was killed just across the street from the site of Wednesday’s hit-and-run when a turning truck driver struck and killed her.
Milwaukee Avenue is a popular stretch of road for bicyclists, but transportation advocates have long said the street needs better protections for pedestrians and cyclists. Since the 2019 fatal crash, Milwaukee Avenue has repainted bike lanes, with some sections also having plastic bollards, but advocates have previously said such measures do little to actually protect bicyclists.
