CHICAGO (May 21, 2024) – On Tuesday morning around 8:35 a.m., three school buses filled with Reed Custer Middle School students were heading to a field trip while driving in the right lane of I-55. Traffic slowed to a stop, but the last school bus was unable to stop in time and rear-ended the bus in front of it. The collision then caused the front bus to hit the school bus ahead of it, Illinois State Police said.
Eleven students were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries, ISP said.
The students were moved to the Loves Truck Stop while awaiting additional school buses to help with relocation, said ABC7 Chicago. The students not taken to the hospital were returned to school and reunited with family, Fox32 Chicago reported.
No additional vehicles were involved in the crash and all lanes were reopened by Tuesday afternoon.
