Rockford media outlets report on wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of the family of a man who died at dentist office

ROCKFORD, Ill. – On October 5, 2021, Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the family of a Woodstock, Ill. man who died after being sedated during a routine dental procedure.

According to the lawsuit, on April 7, 2021, 57-year-old Lyle Schmidt underwent a tooth extraction surgery at the office of Dr. Kurtis E. Wirth in Rockford, Ill. As part of the procedure, Dr. Wirth administered IV sedation to Mr. Schmidt. Approximately 20-30 minutes into the surgery, Mr. Schmidt indicated that he needed to use the restroom. To keep him asleep for the remainder of the procedure, Dr. Wirth gave Mr. Schmidt additional doses of Flumazenil and Naloxone. Shortly after the additional doses were administered, Mr. Schmidt’s oxygen levels declined, he stopped breathing, fell backwards, and went into cardiac arrest. Mr. Schmidt was taken to Saint Anthony Medical Center, where he died three days later.
