Illinois Tractor-Trailer Crashes 2007
- In 2007, there were 16,112 crashes involving tractor trailers in Illinois. These account for just 3.8 percent of all crashes during this time period, but 9.9 percent of all fatal crashes.
- Fatal crashes numbered 111, a decrease of 3.5 percent compared to 2006. The number of fatalities decreased 10.8 percent from 2006.
- The highest number of tractor-trailer crashes occurred on urban interstates (4,675 crashes), followed by urban streets and roads (3,688 crashes).
- Crashes in rural areas were significantly less common – the total for all crashes on urban roadways was 13,650, compared to 2,462 crashes on rural roadways.
- Tractor-trailer crashes caused 124 deaths in 2007. Of those, 12 persons were tractor-trailer occupants, 102 were occupying other vehicles, 7 were pedestrians, and 3 were cyclists.
- There were also 3,195 nonfatal injuries in tractor trailer accidents. Most of the injured persons (2,552) were occupants of other vehicles. Injuries to tractor-trailer occupants numbered 600, with an additional 35 injured pedestrians and 8 injured cyclists.
