Illinois Holiday Traffic Accident Statistics

  • The number of traffic accidents per day in Illinois shows distinct spikes during holidays. In 2007, there was an average of 1,158 crashes per day, with an average of 3 fatalities per day.
  • On Memorial Day weekend in 2007, there were 3,036 crashes. This included 11 fatal crashes with 11 persons killed, an average of 3.4 fatalities per day over the course of the weekend. Two of the fatal crashes were alcohol-related.
  • The Fourth of July in 2007 saw 1,260 crashes, with 4 crashes resulting in 4 fatalities. Two of those were alcohol-related.
  • Over Labor Day weekend, there were 2,972 crashes. Seventeen fatal accidents occurred, resulting in 20 deaths. That represents an average of 6.2 deaths per day. Seven of the 20 fatal accidents were alcohol-related.
  • There were 4,301 crashes over the 4-day Thanksgiving weekend in 2007, including 12 fatal crashes which resulted in 18 deaths. Seven of the fatal crashes, accounting for 11 of the fatalities, were alcohol-related.
  • Between 6 p.m. on December 21 and midnight on Christmas Day, there were 4,375 crashes. There were 13 fatal crashes, a rate of 3.1 deaths per day. Four of the 13 crashes were alcohol-related.
  • Between 6 p.m. on December 28, 2007 and midnight on New Year’s Day, there were 4,775 crashes. That includes 11 fatal crashes. An average of 2.6 persons per day were killed. Of the 11 fatal crashes, 5 were alcohol-related.
